Detention calls in Myawady township, Kayin State, are now full after about 700 people were arrested for breaking the curfew.
Even though the curfew period was reduced to 12am to 4am from 10pm to 4am, people are still being arrested almost every night for flouting the rules.
“We append the curfew breakers and immediately send them to court in the morning. Although we have reduced the curfew time, we are arresting around 20-30 people every night. The detention cells are full now. This has led us to detain some violators in residential areas,” said an official.
Those who are found to have violated the curfew are arrested by a joint team in Myawady township every night.
Although the rule breakers were sent to court and given a fine of K50,000 or one-month imprisonment under Section 144, many of them choose to get the prison sentence because they do not have the money, he said.
